HISTORY of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

 

Abbreviation form of information technology is IT. This Information Technology term is first coined in1978.  Many people know the term but didn’t understand these. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines IT as “the technology involving the development, maintenance, and use of computer systems, software, and networks for the processing and distribution of data.”

Computers existed before 1978 but they are only used in calculation purpose, but in 1978 computers used in data indexing and data sorting written information, the term “information technology” was invented.

The design of computers developed in the forties and fifties. The first office application developed in 1951. In early days most computer operations were deleted for calculations. The programs had to communicate directly with elements of the computer system.

Information technology could never come up like this without the development of natural language programming. In the old times programming language means a series of codes. Codes were written only in numbers thus earlier computer programmers usually came from a mathematics background for a better understanding. In the 1950s and early 1960s, to be a programmer you have to have a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, so the first information technology jobs went to engineers and mathematicians. By the late 1960s, languages such as FORTRAN and COBOL, made programming available to those interested in a career in business, rather than only to engineers.

Scientists and engineers continued contribute to advancement of computing. Programmers, business analysts created th

e field of information technology as a career.

The concept of information technology jobs, as distinct from computing jobs, first emerged in the early seventies.

The spreadsheet and the word processor brought stable applications that help in the career path of IT professional.

C programmers specializing in network applications may be considered for jobs writing database applications.

IT has transformed the world of the information scientist because computers can automatically index data. So information technology is the application of computing to information science.
